Summary
The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative and facilitative group consisting of the Parish Pastor, and nine lay members, called together by the Spirit, to share in the mission of Christ. The Council is a permanent structure of the parish which facilitates constructive dialogue, assists the Pastor and parish in its mission, and provides aid in meeting the spiritual and temporal needs of the parish community.
Purpose
The specific goals and purposes of the Pastoral Council include, but are not limited to:
- To offer vision and direction for the parish, including creation and periodic re-evaluation of the Parish Mission Statement.
- To evaluate the ongoing allocation of resources in attempting to address our mission.
- To discover and find ways to fill stewardship and commision needs within the parish.
- To serve as a channel by which parish members, ministries, committees and groups may make known their views/needs on spiritual or temporal matters.
- To provide leadership and assistance through objectives and goals for the parish and its ministries / committees / groups.
- To serve as a coordinating body for all organizations and activities within the parish.
Membership
Any registered and participating member of the parish is eligible to serve on the Pastoral Council. There are a total of nine (9) lay members serving on the council at one time, with three members rotating out and three new members being initiated into the council each year. Each selected member makes a three year commitment to serve. (Spouses may not serve simultaneously on the council).
Nominations for council members are accepted during the Lenten season. Annually, an information night is held for all nominated and interested persons to learn about the role of the Council. On the night of the information meeting, each nominee that is willing to serve on the committee places their name on a folded paper into a chalice, which then rests on the altar until Pentecost Sunday. On Pentecost, at the 10:00am mass, three of the folded papers are randomly selected from the Chalice as the new council members that will replace the three outgoing members. There is a forth name that is selected as an alternate, should one of the other three become unable to fulfill their term.
This selection procedure has been entrusted to the Holy Spirit since 1986.
Meetings
The council year begins in September and ends in June. Regular meetings of the Parish Pastoral Council are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. Parish members are welcome to observe these meetings. July and August are taken as vacation months.
