Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion

What is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion?

An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) is a layperson or religious who assists in the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass when there are not enough ordained ministers (bishops, priests, or deacons) to do so.

By serving as EMHCs, laypeople have the opportunity to participate more deeply in the liturgical life of the Church and help facilitate the communal celebration of the Eucharist.
